Intangible Insights: A Banker's Perspective
Our Mission. Intangible Insights (2i) aims to discuss, assess, and foster a better understanding of the valuation and corporate transactions of internet-reliant businesses with an emphasis, but not an exclusive look, on intangible assets. The site is geared towards the middle market where the vast majority of internet businesses thrive and prove their viability. We hope that this blog and our research help our readers gain insights into opportunities for, or threats to, their business. We also encourage you to read our first blog post dated December 9, 2008 titled Why We Blog: More About 2i.
What’s an “internet-reliant” business? We encourage you to read our Annual Industry Structure & Overview Report. However, the short and obvious answer is: Any business that, at its core, cannot otherwise generate revenue absent the internet. If you were to strike the internet either as the business’s medium, distribution channel, customer base or other business element with no ready substitute, the business would fail.
Why Intangible Assets? Of course, there are thousands of internet-reliant businesses that have no significant intangible assets but certainly are valuable and the subject of M&A and corporate finance transactions every day. It’s our belief, however, that the challenging and interesting valuations and deals, which set the benchmark and lead the industry, lie in the gray zone of intangibility. Although 2i reports on the entire industry, we find the intangible exceptionally interesting and valuable, and we seek to learn and profit from this space.
We invite you to join us and your insights are always welcome.
